Today we’re going to be taking a look at the ring video doorbell in case you’re not familiar with it. This is the first and only battery-operated Wi-Fi enabled HD video doorbell. What that means is after you’ve installed it at your home, you can get a live video and audio feed of your front porch directly from your smartphone or your tablet even if you’re not at home.
Let me start off by saying, I did receive this doorbell for free for a review and ring is compensating me for providing my opinions. But they are my own opinions and before we get too far into this let’s go ahead and unbox it.
Go through the setup process in the box, you get the doorbell itself a quick install guide. That is very handy an amazing little tool pouch. That has all the pieces and parts that you should need to install it except for the drill obviously. It also has a micro USB charging cable and the mounting plate with a built-in level. Taking a quick look at the doorbell.
The first thing, you’re gonna notice is that 180 degree wide angle lens that’s capable of 720p video. The one that I’ve got is the antique brass color but they do also have three other colors available.
Then there’s that large obvious button that as you would expect rings the doorbell and when it’s ringing it does a little LED light around it which is very nice. But for the person pressing the doorbell they also hear a chime as well which is a nice touch. I think lets them know that they’ve actually pressed it and that the other person’s hearing something on the back of the device.
You’ll see the micro USB charging port as well as the big orange setup button. Mine showed up about 75% charge. So I went ahead and hooked it up for a few minutes and then I headed outside to go ahead and remove the old doorbell now.
As I’m saying you can use this ring completely wirelessly just sending the notifications to your phone or your tablet. But you can also wire it into an existing doorbell. I chose to set up and have it ring the chimes inside my home. It this way also provides it with power through that doorbell power. So you shouldn’t have to charge it ever again.
But if you choose to do it all wirelessly, the built in 5200 milliamp hour battery last about a year before you have to recharge it which would require you actually taking the doorbell off the house taking it inside and then charging it for.
I think, they said up to ten hours after I unscrewed the old doorbell. I had to unscrew the two wires connecting it to the house then I put the mounting plate up and screwed it into the doorframe over the existing doorbell hole using the attached level made it very easy to get everything nice and straight.
In about a minute, I had all four screws holding it up in place. I remove the level from it since I did not need anymore. You cannot have it on there behind the doorbell so to make sure to take that off. I attached the wires to the poles on the mounting plate. Then I was ready to go as a side note and went back afterward and swapped the wires around. As you’ll see in a minute. Because, I think I wired him backward in the first place. Next I had to set up the doorbells.
So I installed the app on my phone I set up an account which also had me confirm my location. Then it had me pressed the big orange button on the back took about 15 or 20 seconds to figure things out between the phone and the doorbell and then asked me to log into my wireless network and I succeed.
It was after that that I found a section in the app that gives full installation instructions as well. It gives full tutorial videos and everything depending on what settings you pick.
So in case you don’t feel comfortable doing it, the way that I did you can watch one of their videos and sort of follow along which is extremely handy. But at that point, I went back out front and used the included torque spit and screwdriver and put the doorbell on the mounting plate screwed it in.
I was ready to go now if you’re concerned about the doorbell being held on by just two little Torx screws. I wouldn’t be first off someone would have to even recognize what it is. What sort of screws it takes to actually remove it.
But even if they did ring has a policy that they’ll replace it free of charge. If it’s ever stolen which is a great policy. If you ask me plus. Since it does have the motion detection if you have that turned on you would actually get to see the person taking it off your house. It will be stored in the cloud if you have the cloud storage option.
I’ve been using the ring doorbell ever since the day that I got it installed. Obviously which was about three weeks ago now. So I thought, I’d go ahead and give you some of my thoughts and impressions on it.
When I first set this up, I was curious if the battery would actually charge off of my house wiring or not. Whether it would ring the existing doorbell in our home both of these concerns were quickly addressed when I noticed the battery percentage was increasing.
When I checked them inside the app and also when you press the doorbell, it well brings the chimes inside the house thumbs up there. Right after I got everything set up though. We actually left town for vacation for a week, so it was perfect timing.
I went ahead and set up all the motion detection zones inside the app. This is my fault. I actually set it to be a little bit too sensitive checking too far away. So while we were at the beach, I received quite a few notifications that there was motion at our home when it was actually just neighbors driving around in the cul-de-sac.
Unfortunately if you want to change that motion detection you do have to make a change in the app and then physically press the doorbell button to confirm it. Not so easy to do when you’re 600 miles away. So I just dealt with a lot of notifications and it did give me a chance to really thoroughly test out the battery life.
After just a few hours I saw that the battery had increased 100% and it has stayed there ever since. So definitely wire into an existing doorbell if that’s an option. But while we were on vacation I was notified every time there was a package dropped off on my front porch. Even if the delivery person didn’t ring the doorbell which was a huge help. But that is an option you can disable in the app if you don’t want motion detection.
But if someone goes ahead and rings the doorbell and you’re away you can actually answer it. Then you can get alive HD video feed with audio and talk to the person standing at your door through your phone or tablet which is really handy.
Since it has built-in night vision even if someone came to the door in the middle of the night maybe attempting to break in or something, I could get a notification. And I could act on it, and see what’s going on as a bit of an unintended awesome side effect. When my in-laws were visiting last weekend my father-in-law decided to stand out on the front porch for a few minutes for whatever reason.
The motion detection caused it to capture some really cool lightning footage. The ring comes with free 30-day trial of their cloud recording option. And watch any of the videos captured by the device within the last six months as well as download those videos after the initial 30 days. You can either pay for their cloud service at 3 dollars a month or $30 a year or you can just access live footage. So there is no any record.
One sort of downside to all this is there’s not a watch Now option built in. So you have two option in order to see video motion detection or doorbell ring. It is not really a big deal. Since usually the only time you’d be interested in watching is if someone is actually coming to your door. But it is an option. I wouldn’t mind seeing. Once my cloud service expires, I’m probably going to try to see how it works out.
I’ve got a feeling that I’m gonna end up coming back for their paid service after a short time.
So to wrap things up, what do I think about the ring video doorbell. I am definitely a huge fan and it’s still the highest quality Wi-Fi doorbell camera on the market.
I love that it does motion detection and vision. And that I was able to easily wire it into my existing doorbell setup.
However, if you cannot wire into an existing doorbell, they do have a second product that’s coming soon. They called it as chime which simply plugs into a wall outlet.
After having used this bell, it’s kind of hard to imagine going back to not having it. So I definitely give this thing a big thumbs up and a recommendation the ring doorbell.

We’re gonna go through all the great new features. This is the ring video doorbell to the front covers come off and underneath is where the battery compartment is. So once you put this up you never have to take it back down. And you just charge the battery underneath that compartment. You’ll find the other faceplate color. So this is the copper faceplate color choice as well as the battery under the instruction manuals.
You’ll find there’s two different wedges. One wedge is for angling. So when you put it up on the wall, you can actually change the angle depending on what angle your wall is. The other one is to direct it right and left. So if you want to sort of change the angle of your ring to the right or the left. You also have that bracket in here all of your install tools are included as with every ring product inside. The install tool package on this surface what you’ll see is a little bit tilted. Because of how the siding is. So I’m going to first use the angle bracket here. Put this on get. It set up about where I want it and then I also because it’s on the right side of the door.
I want to have this one angle this way. So you actually use both of these. Now I’m gonna put this on here and we’re gonna screw these in with the two screws. The Ring video doorbell is a solid choice for people looking to get into smart home technology, and provides security, peace of mind, and ease of use that is not present in many other options at this price point. I’ll go by claim-by-claim to evaluate how well this product lives up to the manufacturer’s claims.
SEE, HEAR, AND SPEAK: This works, but your mileage may vary. You will need to have a very solid WiFi connection to the Ring, so make sure it is close enough to one of your WiFi points (or an extender/Chime Pro) so that it can handle an audio and video stream. It can take a few seconds to establish the connection if you’re powering it from a battery, causing a slight delay when trying to see motion/ring activity or speak with someone at the camera. Additionally, I found the volume on the Ring to be fairly quiet, and I see visitors leaning into the doorbell in video recordings where I speak with them.
GET INSTANT ALERTS: This works flawlessly for me – when it works. I get motion and doorbell alerts instantaneously, notifying me of movement on my porch or visitors/delivery people pressing the button to ring the doorbell. I have to admit that Ring sometimes misses motion on my porch, but this is due to sensitivity and zone settings, which I must finely tune due to my proximity to a busy street. Those located away from busy streets will likely not have this problem.
WATCH IN CRYSTAL-CLEAR HD VIDEO: Ring falls short here. While it is technically HD at 720p, it looks much lower quality in my installed location. It is not terribly grainy or pixellated, but it is not video quality worthy of preservation or bragging. It does the job, but the promotional videos you see on TV or their website are not indicative of the actual video quality you will experience. I’ll sum it up as “fine.”
PROTECT YOUR HOME WITH INFRARED VISION: Reliably switches between infrared and no infrared depending on ambient lighting. A noticeable clicking sound occurs when the camera begins recording at night, which I have seen scare away someone thinking about lurking on my porch. It is loud enough to be heard outside near a busy street, but does not detract from the experience.
COMMUNICATE W/ VISITORS – TWO-WAY AUDIO: Again, Ring falls short here. Audio works, but everyone that has used it when pressing the Ring’s button has been either disappointed by the volume and voice quality, or was nearly unable to hear me entirely. Everyone leans in if I try and talk to them, and I must talk at an uncomfortably loud volume to be heard properly. Apparently it has noise cancellation, but this is not noticeable to me, so I can’t imagine how bad the sound quality would be without it.
LIVE VIEW: It works, but is not super useful for me. It takes forever to power up Live View on battery power, making it nearly useless if you are trying to get to it quickly. I have other security cameras installed on my porch that run on batteries and come up more quickly, so I rely on them instead of Ring for a quick view of my porch.
SETUP IN MINUTES: This is highly subjective and depends on what your mounting surface is made out of. Mine is brick, and it took me “minutes”, but closer to 45 of them than single-digit. If you’re mounting into siding or wood it will be considerably faster, but I had to drill pilot holes and then size them properly for the anchors before finally installing the Ring. Not super fun.
DUAL-POWERED: My home didn’t have a doorbell so I rely solely on battery power. While I am glad it has a battery, I wish it lasted longer. Realistically, I get about a month of battery life before I must recharge it. Admittedly, this is because my Ring records about 4 events every hour, since the street in front of my house has city buses that drive by about this often. I wish I had known about the wedge mounts before drilling holes into my brick exterior, because I’m not drilling more to install the wedge kit now.
Overall the Ring video doorbell is a solid product. I took a star off for the video and audio quality, as they are nowhere near close to what is represented in marketing materials. Everything else works about as well as I would expect, and I am happy with my purchase. One of the biggest selling points is that you can power this entirely by rechargeable battery, so it can be mounted basically anywhere!
I have only been using the Ring for a couple of weeks now but so far it seems worth the cost. I don’t mind the $30 per year cloud storage fee as I’d much rather not have to house the hours of video data this thing records each day in being at the front door. Installation wasn’t difficult once we determined we had the right configs. Things you should know:
1) we tested ring out of the box after a full charge (the ring button will fully circle with blue light when comeplete) and it worked like a dream. Good picture, although fish eyed, even in the dark. That surprised me.
2) we then installed the ring hard wired to our existing doorbell. The doorbell worked, but the Ring video and motion/button notification no longer did.
3) we checked the long list of compatible doorbells that you can find on the Ring website. While the advertising and box says it works with virtually every doorbell… It doesn’t. We have a Nutone bell. Fairly common. Doesn’t work with ring. I was determined to get this thing working.
4) went to Best Buy and purchased the Ring chime. It’s a plug in ring chime that allows you to install the Ring without hardwiring to your existing doorbell. So we have the Ring doorbell screwed in to the same place on the doorframe, but the wires are capped off and not connected to Ring. Plugged in and synced up the chime to wifi and it worked. It’s very loud. You can also hear the Ring chime outside pretty loud so with that plus the Ring chime on every phone, iPad, etc in your house… Maybe not necessary to have the Chime unless you have a 4000+ sq ft house or don’t have phones, tablets or computers with Ring app on them near you. But the plug in Chime was only $30. To me less hassle and cost than buying and installing a compatible doorbell transformer.
5) Ring began working like a champ. Then it grew increasingly unpredictable. We played with the motion settings, decreased it so that cars going by wouldn’t alert us of motion at the door, etc. Butterflies set it off; they say it’s heat sensored; not sure butterflies are warm inside, but I digress. It still works when it needs to “most” of the time.
6) As a doorbell, it’s flawless. If someone pushes the button, the video begins. Talking to the visitor is clear and easy to accomplish. This is the best feature of the doorbell.
7) motion is hit or miss. It works, maybe not always, but enough to give me peace of mind on top of my other home security without video capabilities. Sure I get video at 4am of nothing, so if you are a scared woman living alone this may freak you out more than it helps, but for people with latchkey kids or teens that you want to keep an eye on in terms of verifying they’re home or that unwelcome visitors aren’t at your home, this is excellent. For people who get deliveries while at work or out of town, or folks who can’t get up to answer the door, excellent. To keep intruders at bay… Eh, there are better surveillance systems out there for that.
8) the live view feature does not work if you set up using the not-hard-wired method. So if doing what I did and using the Ring chime, you will not be able to view live feed from your doorbell. You’ll need the stick up cam. Didn’t know this until after I did all of the above to get this thing functioning. But, we ended up buying a Ring stick up cam after all to get a better view of the opposite side of our home since the view from Ring is blocked… and we love it. Use it daily. It’s motion detection is actually a bit more sensitive but that’s okay. We drilled a small hole in our garage door wall to hard wire electricity to the stick uo cam as it works hard every day and loses battery life in less than 2 months for us. Don’t depend on the battery. It will drive you nuts. Or get the solar charger panel.
All in all, I’m happy we made this purchase. I wonder is the newer version really worth it for “better” video quality. This one doesn’t nearly give out 720p so I’m guessing the new version saying 1080p is more like 720. The newer version had some bad reviews in terms of functionality and quality of the doorbell itself so I went with the longer-tested, older version and am quite pleased. So far so good and worth $200 IMO. We are still playing with doorbell types and have yet to find one that works after trying two different mechanical transformers. Customer service was less than helpful and referred us back to the list of tested doorchimes. If you have one that is not on the compatibility list, chances are it will not work hard wired and you will need the Ring chime. And again, know that the live feed will not work. Also concerning charging, it of course depends upon your usage but with a few notifications per day, we notice the battery has drained down about 8% over the last few weeks. I suspect it will need to be unscrewed and put on the charger within the next 5 months or so at this rate. If you are hardwiring, it will charge itself. If you are using the Ring chime and not hardwiring, you will need to charge it using the included USB charger, so expect having to remove it from the front porch every 5-7 months or thereabouts if using this method. Also don’t be afraid to keep playing with the settings… we have managed to get it pretty close to perfect over the last few weeks. It takes some trial & error. It still misses some movement, and still picks up nothing… but it’s better to have than not, IMO.
02/25/19 Update reduce 5 star to 4 star – What you should know
I do really like this, but some things that push it closer to a 3 star (4 for now) rating.
These are very expensive for what you get. They need to come down to below $100 for any component (doorbell, security light camera, stand alone… ) before they are really worth it.
There are many positives about this. I have the G2 doorbell Pro.
– It does a great job of capturing video of anything that triggers it.
– the video actually starts a few seconds before the motion sensors trigger. so it is constantly recording and overwriting the last several seconds of video until it is triggered
– this means you will capture video of things that trigger the motion sensor
– the down side, do not believe that you will be able to interact with people at the door
– they will have most likely left before you even receive a motion alert
– I have on many occasions gone to live view when alerted, only to see no one there. But when the recording becomes available several minutes later, you see the entire action from just before the alert for a full minute of video of the area.
– the good news is, the unit will start recording again if there is additional movement after the recording stops, so unlike the G1 they cannot trip and wait for the recording to stop.
– If the person is legit, delivery or whatever, they will do what they are there to do, drop off a package or ring the doorbell (which is another trigger)
– if they are up to no good (stealing packages), they will be captured on video but you will most likely not see who or what until after they are gone. Certainly information that can be shared with police and neighbors.
– I have seen many postings on the Ring neighborhood network, good for the detectives and for neighborhood watch.
12/26 Update Changed from 1 star to 5 star
Ring support reached out and helped me troubleshoot my doorbell. They then sent me a replacement Doorbell Ring Pro. This did require me to replace my doorbell transformer and it is a bit smaller so it would not fit on my corner mount. But it came with 2 angled mounts. And they offered to send me another if the included one did not angle it enough but was not needed.
I installed the replacement and could immediately tell the difference. Setting the motion zones is easy and offers much more flexibility for where you want motion to be detected. It also has the ability to setup more than one motion zone.
The best thing about this version, when someone/something triggers the motion, it actually starts recording the person/object way out at the motion edge you defined. No more only seeing someone leave your property in the recording. This doorbell is great. It does require more Internet bandwidth, but the difference is amazing.

I do wish it were a bit less expensive. but I am sure that will be the case all in good time.
I like the idea, however this comes up short. I set the sensitivity to pick up motion in the driveway, long before they would get to my front door. This works sometimes, but mostly triggers as they are leaving my doorstep. As many others have posted, you get a good recording of people walking away. I have had flies and crickets trigger the motion sensor, but more frequently the wind is causing enough motion of bushes or trees to set it off. But when delivery drivers pull up, park and walk up, it fails to pick them up. It does capture them if they ring the doorbell.
Some other things to be aware of:
– You get a 30 day free recording, after 30 days, you must sign up and pay $3/month or $30/year if you prepay for the year, to save and access video recordings from a single device.
– If you have more than one device, the fee is $10/month or $100/prepaid year, more economical with 4 or more devices
– I have not figure out how to access this from a DVR and have the recordings saved locally.
– Overpriced, the doorbell is a little pricey, but nothing compared to the floodlight security cameras. Odds are, you would have a single doorbell, but you might want multiple floodlight cameras on other areas of your property. At a whopping $249 each, they are way overpriced. A security camera system costs less and you do get to control the recordings on a DVR.
I am really at a loss to express how disappointing this product was.
To start off, I am extremely tech-savvy and my home is wired with a good 40+ z-wave, Insteon, Hue, and Zigbee devices. I also have extensive experience in electrical engineering.
Right off the bat, the first Ring doorbell I received would not charge via hardwire. This was a brand-new installation with a new transformer, new resistor, and all voltages confirmed with a volt meter. I spent a good 45 minutes waiting on the phone with Ring tech support to get the inevitable conclusion that this was a defective unit. But instead of just swapping it out right there on the phone, they first wanted me to send back the mounting plate, wait for a new one to be shipped, try the new mounting plate, call back if there was a problem, and THEN they would ship out a new unit. That was very disappointing customer service from the beginning.
Luckily, Amazon came to the rescue and shipped out a brand new unit overnight to replace the defective Ring unit.
One would think this would solve the problem but alas, no. TWO DEFECTIVE UNITS IN A ROW that would not charge via hard wire. Thinking that there was some freak problem with the transformer, I borrowed a friend’s Ring doorbell. Boom–charged right away. So yes, I ended up with two bum units in a row. That should never happen.
Setting aside the double hardware failure, a few other major gripes:
1) The Android software for this is absolutely awful. It is incredibly slow, buggy, and crashes frequently. And good luck trying to use the “Live View” feature. It takes at least 30 seconds to connect to the doorbell and again, crashes the app the majority of the time. The frustration level is just off the charts and I cannot believe the app ever made it out of beta.
2) The Ring does not play well with two or more devices. I have an iPad permanently mounted in my living room for all types of home automation, including the Ring app. The Ring app is always open in the background obviously. Apparently if you have one Ring app opened somewhere and you then try to open it on another device (such as my phone when I’m out of the house)–crash. How is this possible?
3) This is just personal, but the actual doorbell sound on this thing is really jarring and there’s no way to change it to anything else. That should be a basic feature.
4) The interface is slow, slow, slow.
This looked like such a wonderful product on the surface but was an utter disappointment. I’ll be returning the second defective unit.
The product works as advertised. I have installed several of these at friends and family homes. For this product recording is activated ONLY based on motion detection. But in practical usage its usefulness varies.
Attached video demonstrates a shortcoming where there is a delay when the recording started after the motion was detected. Due to this delay the face of the thief is not recorded. Because of this we had to recommend one install a security cam which has always live cloud recording. This helps in identifying the culprits. None the less Ring Doorbell helps in confirming the theft recorded in other security cam.
Another practical issue is that a strong wifi signal is key for this product to work properly. If the wifi signal drops below -50dBm the notifications are delayed or never received. At some locations I had install wifi extenders or mount the Ring Doorbell at different location where signals were strong. This can also vary depending on the number of wifi signals that may interfere with speed of notifications.

In its expanding line of home security offerings eufy. Now that company carries the wifi video doorbell which offers alerts a live feed to the app. The ability to talk to those at your door to cave 2560 by 1920 resolution tops the feature set on the doorbell. Let’s check it out with Jordan from nine-to-five toys youtube channel owner. He reviewed this smart wifi door bell with camera and publish for us on youtube.
First up let’s get it out of the box and see what all is inside first thing we see is some literature with a QuickStart guide on top. it’s pretty beefy for a QuickStart guide, but that’s because you if he goes into some nice detail on how to install everything. We also have a template for where to drill the holes when mounting the doorbell which has a clearly labeled step on the back to make sure. You don’t get ahead of yourself there’s a UV security sticker that can be placed in a window to help deter potential robbers.
Next up is the wireless chime that plugs into an outlet and pairs with smart wifi video doorbell. Then we have the actual doorbell itself a simple.

For installation the video doorbell requires the wires from an existing doorbell a slight modification is necessary at the door chime, but eufy wifi video doorbell spells out the easy steps to follow to make this change by installing a jumper between the two terminals. This provides enough power for the wireless video doorbell to operate mounting the doorbell is pretty straightforward.
Because of the placement of my existing doorbell, I had to make another hole in my siding to properly run the wires This was the most difficult part of installation for me. But is completely dependent on how you mounted your current doorbell. Since the doorbell requires the use of existing wires that disable the existing doorbell chime. Euffie smart wifi doorbell also includes a wireless electronic chime that pairs to the video doorbell and can be installed in any outfit within the euphy security app. You are instantly able to see a live feed from the doorbell by hitting the play button.
Another feature is setting up alerts based on movement detected from my experience. The wireless doorbell does a really good job of detecting human movement rather than other shapes. But there was one section of view that was giving
false alarms at night when my light was on to combat this. There are different ways of customizing alerts from the doorbell
one way is to adjust the sensitivity of motion detection the four tiers of sensitivity.
Lets you dial it into your space another way of adjusting alerts is to set an activity zone. The eufy security app lets you choose from a few preset shapes. Or, you can draw your own to customize your space, since the troublesome part of my image is the upper-right corner drawing. A frame around the area where people would most likely be located helps to eliminate false alarms.
Of course one of the great features of the video doorbell is the ability to talk through it. When I’m using with my daughter who loves being able to press the button and talk to me. Especially when I’m away from the house. There are also pre-recorded voice messages. That can be played as a response the video doorbell can also be connected to a Google Voice assistant or Alexa enabled smart display. This lets you see who’s at the door by asking your compatible display. It worked well with the echo show 5. I am testing it on, but it does take a little bit to actually initiate the video feed, but I’m pretty sure this is the fault of the echo not the video doorbell. The show 5 takes a bit to initialize other functions as well.
Overall I’ve been very impressed with the eufy wifi video doorbell. It’s clear installation instructions and features inside the eufy security app. And that make it easy to set up and use what do you think of the video doorbell.

I have been using the eufy Video Doorbell for a few weeks now, and I find that it is an excellent product overall for the price. There is definitely room for improvement, so I have provided a list of pros and cons below, but for this price, it is a great bargain. If the missing video clip bug and false person alerts are fixed in a firmware update, I can give this video doorbell 5 stars… until then, it gets a respectable 4 stars from me.
– The video quality is good (although, the HDR quality is not great… see cons below).
– The doorbell recognizes people extremely quickly
Setup for the most part was easy. The guide in the app is the same as the paper book they supply, it explained everything clearly. I had the old doorbell off and the new one on in no time. The problems started when I got the doorbell to turn on. I was so frustrated I almost gave up and returned it. I would get to the point where the doorbell was looking for a WiFi signal and I would type in my password… then nothing it wouldn’t connect. I pulled out a spare AP and made a special network just for the doorbell and still nothing. I tried many times. Finally, I pulled the doorbell off, held the reset button and tried again. I was able to get the camera to connect. The next problem it wouldn’t connect to the remote Chime. I tried to pair it multiple times and it failed every time. I tried to setup the motion detection area of the camera and it constantly wouldn’t save my changes. I noticed there was an update for the firmware, I tried to run the update and again it failed multiple times. I gave up and left the doorbell hooked up overnight. In the morning, surprisingly the doorbell updated itself and things started to change! I was able to make setting changes and they would save. Response in general was much better. I was even able to sync my chime to the doorbell finally! Since then, it has been running great. My wife created her own account and the ability to share admin rights with her was seamless. It was a rough start but I’m glad I didn’t give up on it right away!
The doorbell cam works very well and the APP is decent too. + simple Alexa integration (just shows the image on voice command).
The image is quite good, and the field of view is both wide angle and has decent vertical range so you can see up and down as well as side by side. The installation and setup was easy, and I especially appreciate the included “wedge” that you can use to point the camera 15′ left or right. I also like the fish-eye distortion correction built into the camera – makes the image quite good.
The “face detection / motion detection” works fine – it doesn’t actually read someone’s face – but the motion detection seems to be able to distinguish between a flying bug, car driving down the street, and a human walking up – just set the motion area and sensitivity to match your installation.
Some things to know:
It DOES use your existing doorbell wiring BUT it bypasses your existing doorbell. I was disappointed it couldn’t keep the existing doorbell in line (some other brands can) . The kit comes with a jump you place across your existing chime terminals to bypass it. Required.
The WiFi seems limited to 2GHz band. I was hoping to use it on my less crowded 5GHz band but no luck.
The built-in night vision IR works well, but in my case, since I have a porch light, I turned it off and the image is just fine at night with the porch light (and in color too!).
Since you can’t use your existing doorbell chime, Eufy needs to offer as an accessory additional remote chimes. I -really- need one more for our 2-story home. Hopefully they’ll have it available soon.
I really wanted to like this product. I’ve used Ring in the past, and I have a Nest Hello currently installed. I’ve never been happy with the latency (6+ seconds) in the Nest products, and the Hello in particular. But, I do like the full time recording aspect.
So, when I read good things about the quick response for the Eufy product, I got giddy with excitement. Alas, it’s got a longer latency (9+ seconds) than my Hello, and it doesn’t pick up motion consistently. If the camera doesn’t record full time – like the Nest Hello – and I can’t rely on it to detect motion, then it’s of little value as a security device.
Kudos to Eufy for trying to get me to like this doorbell. I returned the first Eufy doorbell, but before they refunded my purchase, they said they corrected the latency issue WRT to IOS. I was willing to give it another try. But, in the end, despite constant support from Eufy, the doorbell failed to detect motion reliably – especially in low light, and dark conditions.
I give Eufy and “A” for effort, but a “D” for execution.
This was a replacement for the Honeywell Skybell 1080p Slim Video Doorbell that I was unable to setup/pair on our wifi. The installation of the Eufy was similar to the Skybell with one additional step of adding the provided jumper cable to your existing doorbell chime. Nothing challenging.
– Easy setup
– Multiple accounts can share the feed
– Mobile app notifications send a picture on motion detection and ringing of the doorbell
– No monthly/additional fees
– Two-way talk
– Night vision pictures/video is very detailed
– Video quality crapped out less than 24 hours of installation. Video/images split into two
– Two-way communication didn’t seem to work with background noise/music playing in the background
If Eufy is willing to help/fix the image issue without future issues, then I will be recommending this product to anyone in the market of a video doorbell. The video/image quality looked great up until it got all wonky, which I hope is a one-way situation.

There’s a lot to like about this device. I now have two. The first one was difficult to install, but not because of the doorbell; it was being mounted on brick. Drilling through brick without a hammer drill – ouch. The second one was an easy install, but it was flaky for the first day after I installed it. It wouldn’t connect, then I would see it double-flash red (implying it had low voltage – not true), then go to yellow. I went to the Skybell site and found out that I needed to delete the bell from my account, do a factory reset and set it up again. I did all that. It has worked perfectly since then. I think what happened was that as I was installing the bell, I applied and removed power several times rapidly, even after I configured it, as I was adjusting the bracket (I also got a wedge to angle the unit). I’m wondering if that power cycling corrupted the config.
You can set the sensitivity of the motion detection or even turn it off – a nice touch.
One other thing I’ve come to appreciate: my first bell is on a home without much of an overhang. We recently had some extremely heavy rains (thunderstorms, the works). Water was pretty much being dumped on that bell — so much so that it even triggered the motion detection (once I reviewed the video, I thought it was pretty much valid). Throughout that night, even with the unit having full exposure, being drenched, etc. – it never glitched, never failed. I was impressed.
There were a few things (besides already having one) that made me choose it over Nest or Ring:
-Outstanding nighttime video quality. It’s because of a mix of a pretty good sensor, and it also has a a very bright multi-color LED on the top of the unit (this is in addition to the LED in the button). When the camera goes active at night, that top LED goes to white (unless you configure it differently) and full brightness. It’s enough to get very good images out to about 10 feet. Anyone on my porch is closer than that.
– Free video storage. Everyone else charges for the storage. Skybell doesn’t. I don’t remember how much or how long, but it generally doesn’t matter after a few days anyway. If something is important, you can download the video.
– Nice, hi-res (I have mine set for 1080p) video. Good image quality, pretty good exposure management.
So to sum up:
-Free video storage
-Nice image quality overall
-Great nighttime image quality
-Stable app, quick notifications.
-Installation was a little buggy, though easily resolved.
-Minor thing: the unit is round, which draws a little more attention. Some people may not like the look, although you can get a dark version which kind of disappears. Skybell has the newer slim units, but my first unit was so good I didn’t want to try something else.
I’ve had my first one for nearly a year now, so I don’t expect any surprises. After that initial bugginess, the second unit is proving just as stable and reliable as the first.
3-1-17 Update-We love it. The only false alarm that sets it off is garbage pick up days. I guess the size and noise of the truck sets it off. Other than that, it records motion when someone walks halfway up our sidewalk and when someone rings the bell. I can save videos I want to my phone and the rest are deleted automatically after 7 days. Does exactly what we wanted for now and we are very happy with our purchase. Changed my review to 5 stars.
2-4-17 Original Review Edited-I am a mom in my 40’s and installed this myself. I did a lot of research prior to buying and debated between the Ring Pro and Skybell HD. I went with the Skybell because it was $60 cheaper and you don’t pay a monthly fee to store videos. It only keeps 7 days worth which seemed long enough to me since I’ll probably be looking at them immediately and saving the ones I want.
Pros during install:
1. It was very easy to wire it together after I took off my old doorbell. 2. It didn’t take as long as anticipated.
Cons during install:
1. The old holes didn’t line up on the plate and there wasn’t enough stucco available for me to drill another hole directly above or below due to the huge chunk taken out where the wires come through. Luckily, the wall plate had a hole on the side so I drilled it there instead.
2. Once I put the Skybell on, it is not flush to the wall (see photos) and it did not click like it did in the install video. That drives me crazy. I tried moving wires, tightening screws, repositioning, but still no luck.
3. It took a couple tries to sync to my wifi. It was a little confusing because it was glowing green after I had an error message saying it didn’t connect to our wifi. Press and held the doorbell for 15 seconds, it started blinking and then went back to blinking green and red so I could try connecting to my wifi again. It worked that time.
Pros during use:
1. Picture is super clear during the day. My big pillar in front of it blocks some of my view though. 2. I receive immediate notifications when the bell is rang. 3. When I rang the bell, I could hear the person talking to me from the inside within a second delay so not bad. 4. You can take a photo or download a video and it saves directly to your device.
Cons during use:
1. I acted like a delivery person dropping off a package and the motion sensor, which is set to high, didn’t pick me up until I was leaving and almost missed me completely. One Month Update: This no longer happens.
2. This may be a deal breaker-the person answering the alert on their phone experienced a 20 second delay or longer waiting to hear my response from outside- which will be annoying and awkward for the person standing outside. One Month Update: This no longer happens.
3. Some of the video was pixelated and would jump so you sometimes missed them completely. One Month Update: This no longer happens.
4. The doorbell color changes to white when it is recording and the top lights up so it’s not that discreet. You may as well say ” Alert, you are now being recorded” over a loud speaker! I changed my color to be constantly white to try to make it more discreet but the top still lights up so you know something’s happening.
I purchased the Skybell HD over a RING doorbell after trying to balance the pros and cons from a lot of reviews from Amazon and elsewhere. I appreciated the fact that Skybell offer cloud recording at no extra cost which ultimately won me over. The installation was a breeze and the configuration pretty painless. Having owned the Skybell for about a month I can now confidently review the product and highlight some of it’s issues, the main issue primarily being the motion detection. I live in Florida and summer is approaching quickly this year. I’ve noticed that the motion detection will absolutely not work in any of the low, medium or high settings when the ambient temperature reaches anything above 78 degrees F. If I understand the technology correctly, the Skybell employs a traditional PIR sensor rather than a camera type pixel detection used by the likes of the RING doorbell. With this in mind, I have relocated the Skybell to an adjacent wall meaning that an approaching person will cross the PIR sensor rather than walk toward it. Unfortunately for me it did not improve when the outside temp approached 80 degrees. I can only assume that the heat signature of a person is not different enough than the air surrounding the PIR. This is a shame since the motion feature works well at night and in the morning. Given the motion technology chosen, i’ve no idea what Skybell could do to remedy this issue since this is the nature of PIR over the pixel motion detection. The only other issue i’ve experienced is occasionally the Skybell will stop recording to the cloud. I still get notifications but no accompanying video. To try and overcome this issue I have relocated my Wifi router closer to the front door. When this issue occurs, you have to do a soft reset of the doorbell (Hold the button until the button blinks Green then Red and finally release it when it flashes Blue). I really hope Skybell can figure out the motion detection.
Let me begin by stating that I have FINALLY got this thing working correctly after months of frustration. And I was the person that ultimately figured out a fix. I will share this with you momentarily.

(UPDATE 07/10/2017: For several weeks now, I have been mulling around upping my original 3 stars to 4 because it has been quite some time since my original frustrations of setting up this device and the several app enhancements have made it ever more functional since my initial purchase. However, recent circumstances have moved my rating the other way. The past several weeks my Skybell has been losing power with greater and greater frequency. If I barely touched it, it would power back on, at which point I could lightly rock and twist without it powering off, and then I would check it after 5 minutes and it would be out again. This weekend I set aside time to troubleshoot it. Frustration one, the cheap plastic mounting screw immediately stripped, so I had to remove it with needle nose pliers. A very tedious task. My assumption was that pollen, dirt, or corrosion was interfering with the connection and a simple brushing off would fix things. When I got the back off, however, the true issue was quickly identified. The battery, less than 18 months old, yet out of warranty, has swollen up and pushed the back out making a round bulge right in the center. To get it working I wrapped the power wires down several of the threads of the screws so they would stand out further when screwed back into place. I haven’t lost power since doing this. I still give it two stars because it still functions. If it completely dies before it reaches 4 years old I will drop it down to 1 star. Clearly, with the battery already failing at less than 2 years in, these are not built to last. Photos of the back added.)
The daytime video on this thing is excellent and the color night vision is phenomenal.
Physical set up was a breeze. Our existing doorbell was mounted to the brick and mortar wall, and Skybell’s bracket matched up perfectly with the existing holes, so no drilling. Had I needed to though, it comes with the proper drill bit to do so. I do have to ding them for the mounting screw. It is plastic and stripped almost immediately so I had to finish tightening it with some needle nose pliers. That was pretty difficult.
Here is a huge pro, and ultimately why I chose SkyBell over the competition. Once you buy your product they provide you with free video storage and unlimited free downloads. No subscription fees! Ring, among others, cost about the same and then you are stuck paying a subscription to be able to use your new expensive hardware.
The last pro I can think of is the product looks really good.
Easiest con to explain, is the speaker quality is mediocre. It gets the job done though.
SkyBell’s top priority is iOS. When they add a new feature or fix iOS gets it quite a bit in advance. For example, the iOS app has had the ability to adjust the motion sensor for weeks and it still hasn’t made it to Android. I couldn’t even activate it on my phone (Moto X Pure 2015), I had to use a Galaxy S7 to sync it.
While we are on motion sensitivity, out of the box the motion sensor is way too sensitive. There website says if someone lingers by the door for 10 seconds before sending you a push notification. But as soon as we were stepping out of the door it would go off. Both our original and replacement unit had this issue. Also, the unit was picking up cars driving by on a road 50 feet away from our house or changes in lighting (shadows moving in the distance). After the first day of receiving 6 notifications in under an hour, we had to turn off one of the advertised features. Luckily, a few weeks later they added the ability to adjust the sensitivity and I just so happened to have an iPhone in a drawer, and I was able to use the iOS app to put it on low. Now we don’t get any notifications from the motion sensor. Now that I think about it, I am actually concerned if it is working at all on low. We have packages delivered and such and I haven’t had any notifications since making the adjustment. I see in other reviews apparently changing to low makes it as useless as high. Where with high you get constant notifications and low it is nearly impossible to trip the motion sensor. I haven’t done further testing myself, but that seems to be holding true here given the activity I know has been in front of it recently.
The biggest issue I have had with this unit, which literally took 2 months of exchanges with their support before I figured out a solution, was getting the video, yes the head line feature, to work. On demand and button pushes would sometimes take 30 seconds to 2 minutes for the video to start coming through and even then it would be just primary colors or video with static in large areas of the video or a black screen with little dots of light randomly spread out. Completely useless if trying to id a vandal or package thief or to have a conversation with whoever was there (because usually they weren’t there but I couldn’t tell since I couldn’t see). I immediately went to their website, read through the FAQ, troubleshooting, and support info. I logged on my TP-Link Archer C5 changed the channel bandwidth to 20Mhz and checked everything else was as they suggested. No luck. I changed my Cat5 cables to Cat6. Nothing. I tried getting a extender and putting it in the outlet next to the window where SkyBell sat. Same issues. I had my cable company come out and hook up a cable port in the room closest to SkyBell. No improvement. I cleared all other devices off of the 2.4Ghz channel and only allowed SkyBell to use it. Nope. Firmware, all up-to-date. I did several speed test for Skybell’s SSID and was consistently clocking over 3Mbps, well over double Skybell’s requirement of 1.5Mbps. When I told support my results they actually said, well 5-6Mbps would be better. Really? Ok, called Internet provider and upped the speed. Now I’m getting just over 6Mbps. No improvement. Somewhere along the way they sent a replacement product and nothing got better.
Skybell’s support is an absolute joke. They are very nice, but they repeatedly failed to fully read my emails. I would give them very detailed information like, I did a speed test, under these conditions, and here were my results. And they would reply something like, here’s an idea, do a speed test, here’s how to do it, and let me know the results. This happened repeatedly with various bits of information.
Finally, being at my wits end, I wrote them an email letting them know I couldn’t wait for them to start selling their product through 3rd party vendors so I could start reviewing it (true to my word). I listed my previous experience, recapped the issues, and told them to quit trying to blame my settings, ISP, and acknowledge their product was not functioning properly. I received a phone call the next day apologizing for my experience. Again, I had to repeat myself constantly to the guy trying to make things better from having to repeat myself constantly. Even after correcting him several times that I have had only 2 units (the 1st and one replacement), at the end of the call he was still perplexed that I was having issues on my 3rd unit. He also kept saying things like I was the only person having issues with their product, still not owning the issue. Being at work, he said he was going to shoot an email to me with the details regarding his top tech guy who would be calling me either tonight or tomorrow. I sat at home all day Saturday waiting and never received the call. It turns out the guy was off those 2 days. Seems like an easy thing to check and an unacceptable error when you are trying to fix an upset customer’s issue.
I finally get a call from the top guy and we run through pretty much the same info and same troubleshooting again. Side note, anytime I reset the device it would kind of work for about 24 hours before issues returned, so it made it hard to immediately let him know if anything changed right then.
He suggested that I get a Netgear router because he’s noticed a lot of issues with TP-Links, mine was only 3 months old and had the latest (I know this is about to change) AC standard. But I did. I got the Netgear AC1750. No improvement. I would like to mention that I also have a Canary cam that happily worked in every configuration I had trying to get SkyBell to work. I emailed him back a week ago asking him to review the settings he wanted on this unit and he still hasn’t contacted me.
I deduced that the primary thing that SkyBell needs to operate correctly is upload speed. It has to get the video to their server in order to record and relay that data to the requesting device. So I enabled QoS upload, ran the speed test to determine the value to use for speed cap, added a rule using SkyBell’s MAC ID Address and gave it the highest priority. Since doing this, videos start on the app in under 2 seconds. My TP-LINK doesn’t have a QoS setting, so it looks like I will be keeping the Netgear. I’m only in my first 48 hours since adding the QoS setting and issues have had a tendency to pop back up in a day or two. I will be sure to update my review if they do return.
(UPDATE #2 02/10/2017: Someone in the comments mentioned that my Netgear/QoS solution worked for them and shared that “All SkyBell MAC IDs start with “D0:C1:93”.” I thought this may be helpful to anyone trying to do their own troubleshooting.)
One other issue I have noticed is if I try to launch Skybell through the notification popup that I get from a button press or motion detection, all I get is a black screen. But if I ignore the convenient popup and instead go to the app and launch it and then click watch live everything is fine. I have read several reviews of the 2.0 that had this same issue so I hope it is something they are aware of and attempting to fix.
Areas SkyBell needs to improve: Better trained customer support, better mounting screw, better speakers, hardware that plays nice with a broader range of routers and phones, and equal treatment of iOS and Android.

I have had this for about 4-5 months now. The installation was a bit complicated and the picture quality is good. However, here are the real issues with this product.
1. The customer service is pretty bad. You can never get them on the phone when you need it. Leave a message and they will call you back in 48 hours (they say 24). You might not be at home when they call back so they cannot be of assistance.
2. My Skybell stopped working for a week after it worked for 4 months. Since I could not get help from skybell customer service, I had to troubleshoot it all on my own.
3. After I got the issue resolved with my Skybell, without any help, then skybell customer service managed to get a hold of me. I tried to talk to them about a few other issues I was having with delayed uploads and they were extremely difficult to deal with. Basically they said the advertised upload speed required of 1.5 Mbps was wrong and Skybell needed 4mbps. I told them I had 6 Mbps measured at the Skybell. They told me I needed a booster which didn’t make any sense so we disconnected. I think they have a product issue and I wasn’t going to spend more money to fix their problem.
3. It begins recording as people leave and not as they walk towards the door. That’s not useful as we don’t get their faces.
I am now willing to swap this out with a Ring, just to see if that performance is better.
Update on August 28th 2018- I now want to return this product and try the ring for sure. It looses connection every day and I have to go through the setup process each time. I even setup a router 2 ft from the bell! The button also get stuck constantly. Customer service still sucks. Can’t get them to pick up the phone.
I bought the Skybell doorbell off amazon and had great expectations for it, but they didn’t hold up. When you look at the guide that explains all the different color light and what they signal, i didn’t expect that i was be seeing all of them flashing everyday. I see my doorbell flashing orange at least 5 times a day, meaning it’s disconcerting from my WiFi and reconnecting. I have a high end router with 300mps speed, and nothing else has this problem in my home. I see the red/blue flashing multiple time a day. I see the green/red everyday. It stops working completely, absolutely everyday. To make matters worse, it not only doesn’t work, it signals to all my neighbors and anyone coming to my door that it’s not working. I’ve had neighbors come to my house and ask why it’s doing it, so not only does it not work, it let everyone know it too. I’ve call their support center 3-5 times, with not one person answering my call yet. I’ve left messages that they claimed they would call back, and have had zero contact from them in any form. Seeing the flashing doorbell every time i come to my door absolutely makes my blood boil everyday, because it seem like there is not light to this tunnel with a skybell and I just going to have to accept I wasnted $200 and buy something else. Don’t buy this doorbell. Don’t become angry every time a new person asks why your doorbell is flashing. Don’t be like me.

I love my August Doorbell camera. I was apprehensive getting this because of some of the less than stellar reviews. However, I’ve been very happy with it. The August Doorbell Camera works off your wired doorbell and most doorbells work provided you have enough Volt Amps flowing. The if you have a 10VA transformer you may want to upgrade to a 20VA or 30VA if you run into issues. One of my favorite parts of this Doorbell camera is that it will capture video a few seconds before it senses motion. Some key bullet points:
* Comparing this to my Arlo Pro 2 security cameras, the August is much more reliable (no false alarms with the August)
* The Arlo Pro 2 triggers recording after motion is detected and I sometimes miss the first few seconds that can be important.
* The video field of view isn’t as wide as the Ring but the August Doorbell camera video isn’t as distorted either.
* You can retain your indoor door bell chime and additionally either use the outdoor chime too or silence the out door chime.
* There are no batteries!
I bought 2 of these to pair up with my carport and front door in May and have not had any problems with them. I will admit that the radios, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, are pretty weak. Both doorbells are less than a foot away from the locks they are paired with having only a door separating them and the signal strength always reports as poor. This hasn’t been an issue for me, they operate the locks flawlessly every time. I have a mesh Wi-Fi network with satellite routers within 20 feet of both doors which provides a solid 5ghz connection and reliable 500 Mbps internet service. The speed tests from the doorbells report 30+Mbps download and 5+ up. The video doesn’t lag, doorbell calls are responsive and notifications are quick even away from home on TMobiles cell network. I would not recommend getting this if you would be unable to provide similar connectivity. The range on the Wi-Fi radios is pretty low. They’ll drop down to 2.4ghz if a strong enough 5ghz signal isn’t available. The speed tests suffer tremendously at 2.4ghz and it’s during that time that performance isn’t up to par. Most complaints I’ve read seem to be due to not having the proper infrastructure in place to support the low range radios in this product. Given that, I would only recommend this product to semi tech savvy people that can provide close and fast 5ghz Wi-Fi signal to the doorbell (I have a 3 router Orbi AC3000 mesh setup) and are able to supply at least 13volts through the doorbell wiring. So for my particular setup, this is a great product. If you have slow or spotty internet service or are not technically savvy enough to understand these requirements, I’d move on to something else as
I rarely ever write reviews but I felt the need here as I want other owners to be aware of the pros/cons of this product. Build Quality – no concerns there. I like the styling a lot and the wedge feature to mount the doorbell however you feel is appropriate for your front door space.
Installation – super easy, just need some basic tools
App Integration – if you own an August lock, I highly recommend getting this doorbell as it makes the most sense. You just need to be aware of the limitations of the product in this generation
1st Complaint – won’t work with digital doorbell kits: This product does not work with digital doorbells. I find this to be a bit ridiculous since I understand Ring does work with a good list of digital door chime kits. In order to install the August Doorbell Cam Pro 2 I had to go out to Home Depot and purchase a $20 mechanical door chime and uninstall my digital doorbell to replace it with an old school setup. Not to mention, my digital doorbell was flush mounted in my hallway and the mechanical chime is another large box protruding from the wall. Now, I’m not a programmer in the tech world by any means as I’m sure there is a large investment to accomplish digital doorbell integration BUT I believe that this puts August behind the competition in the current market.
2nd Complaint – motion sensing is not great: I had to fuss with motion sensing significantly to find a sweet spot and to this day I still have not found it. I have the sensitivity turned up to 78% (0 – 100 scale) and there are many many times where I have had people come up to the door, including myself and friends, where it does not recognize any movement yet it recognizes cars in the street going by. This is the largest flaw of this product and particularly maddening considering the price I paid for it. I believe this may have to do with the camera not being as good as it needs to be. See 3rd complaint below….
3rd Complaint – camera exposure isn’t accurate: I have a front porch about 12’x11′ (small) and it is in the shade constantly during the day. At night, I have an LED R30 floodlight above that lights the entire porch very well. During the day, the exposure is particularly poor in the shade. The camera is not smart enough to properly expose people’s body’s and faces in the shade when it is sunny just outside the porch. Case in point, I can pull out my iPhone 7 and simulate it in the exact position/environment as the doorbell and it will auto expose to a more correct image where the August Doorbell Cam Pro will not. I believe the camera and imaging technology needs to be improved for their next generation.
4th Complaint – no motion zone creation: I did some research after I purchased this Doorbell Cam Pro and saw that Ring offers motion zone creation. This would be extremely beneficial so that I can avoid picking up cars in the street and adjust my motion sensitivity according to the specific zones I need alerts on.
In closing, the doorbell cam is overall OK however I believe these features are necessary for it to be a GOOD or GREAT product. I hope that future updates and/or the next generation cam can address these issues.
I have both the August doorbell cam pro, and the Smart lock. They work well together, but I’ve had quite a few issues.
– For some reason when I had a Huawei Mate 9 Android phone, I would get an error when trying to view the camera. Turns out it was the phone and the app combo. I got a Oneplus 6T phone now and the app works better, but not perfectly. On occasion I still am not able to view the camera live or answer the doorbell. I usually need to force close the app and restart it, then it works. Working with support proved to be challenging. They sent me a replacement doorbell to try (refurbished) which I couldn’t even pair with the app. Trying to troubleshoot that with them was useless. I was ready to give it up until I just tried another phone, and it worked. It would be nice if they did a desktop or browser app.
– This is a huge issue. Since it started getting warm/sunny (I’m in Central Florida), the doorbell goes offline daily from around 11am to 4pm. The front of my house faces south so the doorbell is in direct sun so it looks like it overheats. To be fair Ring doorbell had issues also. But when I’ve dealt with Ring support, they are MUCH more responsive and helpful than August support. I tried to reach out to August support on this issue, seeing if they have some type of shade accessory for the doorbell and have gotten no response. Not surprised based on my past dealings with them. So most of the time the doorbell is useless when it’s warmer. I’m trying to find something I can shade the doorbell with (that doesn’t block the camera too much) and I haven’t had much luck.
– Outside of these specific issues, the doorbell and lock work well together, and work well with Alexa. I also have a Smartthings hub, and am able to control the lock from there and integrate it into a smart home ecosystem. If your current doorbell is not in direct sunlight, and you have a more popular phone (LG, Samsung, Pixel), I’d definitely recommend the doorbell and lock together. If you’re a person that uses vendor support a lot though, be prepared to be disappointed, and annoyed when you have issues.
I’m giving the doorbell 3 stars, because for this price, their support should be better. Also, they should have some type of way to compensate homes that current doorbell faces the sun.
I just received the doorbell camera on the 2nd of July and now I am updating my initial review to “I Hate it” versus “Its OK. I gave August every chance I could but this review is not going to be nice. I tried nice, but after two business days of trying to get a solution out of them, the kids gloves of nice are coming off. So why am I writing a bad review. Initially my the motion detection worked sporadically at best. Shortly after I discovered the outdoor speaker sounded horrible when people listened to the audio. Sometimes it worked ok, but more frequently than not the motion detection failed, which results in delayed videos and pictures of the persons car driving away (not arriving). Conceptually this company could have a great product, but it’s clear from the numerous negative reviews their doomed!
Received a second device from August so it’s not just a lemon issue, it appears based on the reviews all of these cameras are junk. New one almost never records people until their feet away, and sometimes you don’t even see the persons face. As I type right now the device dropped off of the wireless network even though it’s feet away from a powerful wireless router. Returning the steaming pile of junk and I will never buy another product from this company unless they fix their problematic devices. Concept is great like I said, but the company needs to invest in technology that actually works!
It’s really sad too, because their door lock works really well compared to their camera!
Support – August has the ABSOLUTE WORST support I have ever dealt with during my lifetime (I am over 50). When you call them to submit information their written statement is they will follow up within 24hrs. Well 24 hours came and went nobody followed up, not even an email. The last time I called, I asked for a manager and was told that person is at lunch and they would call back in a few hours. Each time I called August it was like I was starting from scratch until I explained I already have an existing case. That process alone was frustrating while having to repeat the same issue over and over (called about 5 times as of writing this). Their on hold music is so bad it will make you want to hang up, but that’s not the worst of it.
August App – I don’t like the idea that every company is trying to charge you for video storage, but all these companies are doing it. Their trying to make a buck off you when they could offload the video to your own private storage using something free like OneDrive, etc…
All companies get a big NEGATIVE in the lack of a Windows 10 app. I work from home and don’t think I should reach for my phone to answer the door. Make a still app for the millions and millions of PC’s that exist guys! Pretty sure all will agree that they’d rather have a Window on their PC popup when someone comes to the door vs searching for their silly phone.
MOTION DETECTION – takes too long to respond even with the wedge installed and the motion detection set to maximum. Device rarely if ever captured footage of people arriving at the door. It could sense cars driving by, but it could even detect my own car when I parked in front of my home. The morning I had a technician visit my house to look at my air conditioner, the device didn’t even detect him until he was walking into my home.
AUDIO – On more than one occasion during testing I observed garbled speech. You’re paying a lot of money for a device that should have much higher quality, so one star in speech. I tested this over and over, had 5Ghz signal and excellent connection, and still the audio was bad. The person at the door was the one with the bad experience because the speaker sounded horrible. On the app side the person at the door speaking sounded ok.
VIDEO – Great FOV but you’ll need additional lighting at night to see things more clearly. You can take the lighting issue as a negative or a positive depending on perspective. If you want color video at night you’ll need sufficient lighting, and that’s really a tradeoff compared to doorbells with night vision.
After a few days the video on the device became blurry which basically makes the device worthless. I would expect this out of a 20 dollar device, but not a 200 dollar device.
Things they don’t tell you – The documentation says the device needs 12 – 24 volts, which technically is true. What you may or may not find wrong with that statement is fact your doorbell will perform poorly if the light on the doorbell is set to on. The voltage drop may or may not have an impact on your doorbell ringing.
Setup – the only thing negative I have to say about this is it could come with a written set of instructions vs forcing you to depend on a PDF
Works with existing doorbell transformer and setup was super easy, so no real complaints here.
August App and Doorbell are integrated, so if you buy these together you can get away without their Connect Hub. I have not tested this in sufficient detail yet, so I cannot promise the integration is flawless. Like anything that requires a network connection things can fail. Always have a key with you for a backup (will update this more once tested).
Appearance – this is more a personal taste thing but I like the visual appearance compared to other doorbells. This is purely personal, so your mileage may vary in this catagory
I like the visual appearance and all of the features but August needs to work on the finer details of functionality. This could of easily been a five star review, but it’s pretty clear that August is not paying attention to little details and supporting customers.
Conclusion – Stay away and buy another vendors product
See attached video for yourself, I attached one of the invisible A/C technician arriving but you won’t see the guy. I would of attached another with audio, but Amazon only allows for one video.
After receiving a defective August Cam Pro, 2nd Generation, I exchanged it 4 times, twice with Amazon and twice directly with August. None of the five cameras ever worked. Issues were: Would not connect to my home Wi-Fi after initial setup even though my Wi-Fi signal was EXCELLENT per the August application (all 5 cameras), Home doorbell would not ring, Video speed was 0 for both upload and download, AC voltage showed 0 when voltage checked 18 volts with a voltmeter, Unable to watch video “live” with the August application, Unable to answer doorbell ring to go “live,” Unable to receive doorbell ring notifications or motion detector notifications.
In addition, August Tech Support was totally useless. During my interactions with August Tech Support I spent over 4 hours on the phone with them and spoke with at least 6 tech agents, including 2 supervisors. None of them had any idea how to fix any of the above issues, and they never admitted that these issues had ever been reported before (very hard to believe). I sent them photos of my voltmeter showing 18 AC volts for my doorbell system, and they still did not believe me that my doorbell voltage was, in fact, 18 volts!
Bottom line: The August Cam Pro, 2nd Generation could be a great product, but the manufacturing quality control is abysmal (made in China?). Customer support is totally worthless. Not one of the agents had any idea how to troubleshoot any of my issues, and it took hours for them to agree to replace the defective ones. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT UNTIL THERE IS EVIDENCE THEY HAVE FIXED THESE ISSUES!

I recently installed a Nest Hello doorbell video camera, which works very well but the included wedge mount only is fixed at 30 degrees. I needed a greater angle so I bought this mount which is adjustable up to 45 degrees. It was totally compatible with the Nest and now I have a much better view. Only gripe is that the large flat wall plate has a large rear gap at maximum angle so I didn’t install it.
I needed my Nest Hello to be able to be turned at more of an angle than I was able to do with the Nest wedge provided with the device. I was hoping this product would give me the full 35% angle it claimed and it didn’t disappoint. It arrived on time and in good packaging. The instructions were easy to follow and I was able to install it myself within just 10-15 minutes.

The product is composed of a wall plate, an angle mount and a swivel bracket that attaches to the Nest. OK, so the product looked nice when installed, but there are some serious caveats. Firstly, it’s super easy to just pry the unit out at the top swivel hinge with a flathead screwdriver (cause I did just that to pop the nest out). Maybe version 2 should be metal screw on at the swivel hinges (at least at the bottom one for better securing). Also the angle mount doesn’t really sink into the wall plate. The holes in the wall plate are round, while the back of the angle mount is square. I ended up gouging out a square hole ( 2 of them) in the wall plate, so that the angle unit can sink into the wall plate (after 45 minutes of snipping at it with a wire cutter).
Then I found out that the swivel bracket gets stuck if you decide to replace the (nest mount to )swivel bracket screw with a bit longer screw (metric size), so if you screw the swivel bracket in at an angle, you lose the ability to swivel it to gain access to the pinhole (again why I ended up popping it out with a flathead screwdriver). I ended up using the provided screw on the bottom and a bit longer one at the top, for a better grip, because that is the only thing attaching the nest hello to the swivel bracket. Overall a good idea, but a bit flawed in some areas.
